We are certain that by the time you get to this point you have
researched greyhounds on the Internet and perhaps have read
"Adopting the Racing Greyhound" by Cynthia Branigan, or "Guide to
Adopting and Ex-Racing Greyhound" by Carolyn Raeke and another
informative easy reading book is "Retired Racing Greyhounds for
Dummies" by Lee Livingood. These are the steps to follow if you
would like to adopt a dog from GPA-Michigan:
1) Fill
out an application. You may either fill out an application online (click
here) or print it and mail to any of the representatives found
on the page Contact Us page. The questions asked on the application are used to
help determine if a greyhound will fit into your household.
2) The
representative closest to you will contact your veterinarian (if you
have one) to determine whether your other pets are up to date on
their vaccinations and heartworm prevention. We will also contact
the other personal references you give us.
3) We will
have a GPA representative visit your home. This gives us a chance to
really talk with all members of the family about the
responsibilities of greyhound ownership, and bring a greyhound or
two into your home to see how a dog would get along with the people
and other pets that live there.
4) After the application is approved we work with
you to match an available foster dog with your home environment.
Please browse our AVAILABLE GREYHOUNDS to see if there is a dog there that appeals
to you. We always take your preferences into consideration. This
process may take a couple of weeks. We ask that you be patient and
wait for the right dog. Once you have your pet, you will agree that
your greyhound was worth the wait!
5) We
match you with a buddy who is an experienced greyhound owner. Your
buddy will stay in contact with you throughout the two week
transition period, and after that will be available to answer any
questions or concerns you have about your new family member. We want
you to feel confident that we are only a phone call away.
